Scarlett's 1st Birthday

Scarlett and Oscar share the same birthday (1 year apart). I got to photograph Scarlett the day after she was born so it was fun to be there to photograph her birthday a year later. As soon as I walked in the door I knew it was going to be a great party when I saw the birthday "cake" of cupcakes from Trophy Cupcakes with cotton candy toppers and butterflies. Scarlett was the perfect birthday girl. She was so excited when her cupcake and candle arrived but made sure she didn't get messy at cake time. Then it was gift time (which were beautifully wrapped as you will see) & she turned on the party girl giggles. The biggest smiles came when she opened a Dr. Seuss book (that had all the adults smiling too...and secretly very proud that at 1 yrs of age she is already into books...go girl!).

Scarlett Emerson 2 days old

I had been anxiously awaiting the news that Scarlett Emerson had arrived. I will think of Scarlett every year on her birthday because Oscar shares the same date (June 27). She is beautiful and I absolutely loved her full head of hair!

Congratulations Kristin and Rob!

I had a first a few weeks ago, photographing a baptism. Little Scarlett who has made a few appearances here was baptized at St. James Cathedral. It was a bit of a challenge because light was limited and flash (which I do not like to use anyway) was not an option. I had so much fun watching all the little ones react to getting dunked or water poured on them. There were quite a few tears shed but not by trooper Scarlett. She remained calm throughout the entire service.

I have been envying this next family for over a year now and after seeing them again I continue to be green with envy. They moved to London with their daughter and have been enjoying all the living abroad brings...one day I hope to do the same with our boys. I was flattered that when they were planning their summer visit home they made sure to fit me into their crazy schedule. It was so fun to see how much little Scarlett has grown (I have been photographing her since she was brand new) and run all over the Locks with her. I couldn't choose just one image of her running away from and then back to mom and dad, I love the whole series.

I have photographed Scarlett every 3 months since she was a newborn. It really is amazing to see how much change happens in such a short time. She is 9 months now and I just don't think it is possible for her to get any cuter! She is on the move and we had so much fun all over the house! I can't wait to photograph her 1st birthday party in June!

After returning from my quick trip to San Fran for a lighting workshop and a day of R&R I was treated to a nice relaxing Mother's Day with my family that included an afternoon nap (the best free indulgence money can buy in my book!!) and a delicious home cooked meal that I didn't have to lift a finger for...it was a great day. I hope you all had a good day too!
I'm sure Mother's Day was a little more crazy for this family. On the 20th they are embarking on a 3 year adventure in London. I was lucky enough to fully document Scarlett's 1 year w/ 5 sittings and I was blown away to see how much she has grown this past year. She was a little shy at first but she came around and shared her beautiful smile with me.

With newborns you never know what you are going to walk into (I say that as though all other ages are completely predictable...). They may sleep the whole time, they may pee 6 times covering everyone involved, they may cry because all they really want is to be swadled or nursed. But it is always fun because there really is nothing you can do but hope for the best and work w/ whatever state they are in. Fortunately I have been lucky lately & all the newborns have been on their best behavior. Last week Scarlett (3 wks old) did an outstanding job. She even gave us a few smiles.
